Renting a house in Galilee
More often than not we hear of people who are interested in changing their lives and move to the Galilee to raise their standard of living but they are afraid of the drastic change involved in transferring the entire family to an unknown place. The decision involves finding new source of income and purchasing an asset in hundreds of thousands of shekels with all the strings attached.
I advise these people to check out life I the Galilee by first renting a house here. The ideal would be to find a house for rent in the settlement where the potential asset is found. However, even if that is not feasible, finding a house in an adjacent settlement could also be good especially if it belongs municipally to the same regional council under which supervision you are interested to live in the future. This would allow you to test the waters be it community life, services, schools and kindergartens, the informal education, extra curricular activities, culture activities, employment options, climate, living costs etc.
Sadly, it isn't always easy as currently, the supply of accommodation in the Galilee is limited. Indeed, the demand for housing is high, even outside Tel Aviv. This is a task that demands tremendous effort but is realistic.
I warmly suggest starting to look as early as April-May and not wait for the last moment (July-August) and attach herein a list of recommendations and references to assist you, at least partly:
1. Log into web sites of the regional councils and look for a board that advertises houses for rent. Such effective and time-saving boards can only be found in the Misgav Regional Council website http://www.misgav.org.il/Dep/rent/ and in the Jordan Valley Regional council website http://www.j-v.co.il. Additionally, at the Upper Galilee Regional Council website http://www.galil-elion.org.il you can find a list of contacts in kibbutzim who are specifically engaged in renting houses in kibbutzim.
2. log into the website http://www.romgalil.org.il and look for settlements of interest and call the contact in the settlement. There are settlements that advertise a special phone number for potential tenants.
3. Log into commercial websites designated for ads.
4. There is yet another possibility which is to drive up to wander around the Galilee region and check out a place
you like. There, you could place an ad. on the bulletin board that is usually next to the grocery store or the secretary of the settlement announcing the fact that you are interested to rent a house in the area. Don't forget to bring along some drawing pins and cellotape.
By the way, all these tips are just as useful for people looking for a large lot/ a farmstead/ a lodge and any other property that does not meet the common standard today in house expansion on 500 meter squared. Whoever is searching for such property would have to buy it from private owners and information about it can also be found in the channels depicted above.
