The Ministry for Development of the Negev and the Galilee
The Ministry for Development of the Negev and the Galilee under the supervision of Silvan Shalom was established in 2005 in order to advance and promote the Negev and the Galilee and place them at the top of the government's list of priorities. Its very founding means that the government is obligated to bring growth abnd prosperity to the region while taking advantage of all the possibilities in it as it is quite clear that the future of Israel lies in the development of theses regions.
The ministry has begun in putting up stable infrastructure to support the development of the industry and employment, settlement and housing as well as education and culture while carrying out groundbreaking projects.
The ministry's goals are: implementation of the strategic plan of developing the Negev, consolidation and implementation of a national strategic plan of developing the Galilee alongside the application of the plan of strengthening Haifa and the North as had been accepted by the government after the fighting in the north at a cost of 4 billion dollars; harnessing the Jewish world to promote strategic projects in the Negev and the Galilee; encouraging entrepreneurs and investors to shift their economic activity to the Negev and the Galilee with the effective support and assistance of the ministry and advancing of landmark projects in employment, settlement, education, industry, tourism, society, culture and handling of the needs of the non-Jewish sector.
The Authority serves as an executive force of the Ministry and carries out the policy of the ministry. Additionally, the committee of ministers headed by the minister of the Negev and Galilee Development serves as an important tool in lateral decision making and transfer of budgets for development actions with coordination with the government bureaus and non-governmental organizations.
The elected president Shimon Peres headed the vice prime-minister office for the development of the Negev and the Galilee since the day of its establishment.
Yaacov Edri held this office from 2007 until 2009 when Silvan Shalom took over serving as vice prime minister, the minister of the Negev and Galilee development Ministry and the minister of regional cooperation.
As of 2009, the CEO of the ministry is Ms. Orna Hosman Bahor who serves as the manager of the Negev and Galilee development Ministry and the Ministry of regional cooperation.
